While the ICT industry is a relatively minor contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, its footprint today is growing. The challenge to the sector as a whole is to reverse this trend — and capitalize on its inherent ability to minimize other sectors’ environmental impacts as well. In this paper, Alcatel-Lucent focuses on the access portion of the network, identifying specific instances in which currently available technologies can reduce power consumption and environmental disruption to achieve measurable, meaningful improvements. By employing solutions such as these, the ICT industry stands to fulfill its potential of reducing GHG emissions by 15 percent over the next 10 years.
